I think you will ultimately be happiest with 63/37 rosin core in the 
diameter of your choice ( I use .030"). I gave up on 60/40 years ago and 
I solder lots of thru hole & surface mount stuff every day in my work. 
If you read the Wikipedia article on solder, you will see probably more 
than you want/need to know on the subject. Read about eutectic properties.
