Bill,
You need a zero some place.
I think your vertical line is just a wrong character .
You got out the alcohol torch and unsoldered the character tabs from the end of the
character arm. You could melt the solder and align or miss align the characters as needed.
Our ditty ops would wear the numbers out in a couple months coping cut number code.
The typewriter repair guy could swap out the 10 number character pads in about that many minutes.
The vertical slash may have been more readable over the 3689| set of characters.
And thus have been a local modification.
They may have used o for 0 and the vertical bar was a missed character as opposed to
putting a space on the paper.
Some body has to remember what was going on.

Guys,The USS Wisconsin Radio Club purchased an Underwood "Mill" for our WWIIposition we are setting up on the ship. It is all upper case as you would expectbut the top right key which should be a 0 with a slash is a just a verticalline. In order to type a 0 with a slash you would have to back space for thezero...it makes no sense to me. I feel it is a communications mill because whoelse would use an all CAPS typewriter? I would appreciate any comments onthis. It's a great old mill that will have a permanent home of the BigWiskey.
