        I think I will post this and be quit of this OT stuff.  The 
collection at the site below is far from complete.  There may be others 
on Google Books but I didn't really search it.  The earliest number on 
the site with Scratchi is January 1934.  If George Loyd wrote this he 
was only 17 at the time and it does not appear to be the first of the 
series.  I strongly suspect someone else originated the column and the 
character of Scratchi and Loyd took it over after WW-2.  Likely to 
remain a puzzle unless someone _really_ knows.  As you have all 
discovered I love doing historical research and can be pretty thorough 
(and maybe boring).
