After reviewing my post below, I realize that power transformers that supply
filament voltages would likely have the largest wires on those outputs. You
should be very careful that you don't put that 6V on one of those windings, lest
you end up with 120V (or more) on other windings!

That's actually what I often do since, as you say, the fil windings are usually the easiest to recognize. Just tape off the leads to the windings that you're not testing at the moment. Or secure the ends of all of the leads down to a breadboard thing. And keep one hand in the back pocket, etc.

Sorry I overlooked that
bit of info!

little work with an Ohmmeter should enable a person to determine the terminals
of the transformer described below.

should be easily located since it is likely that the same gauge of wire would be
used throughout the primary. The same holds true for the secondary which likely
is center tapped.

transformers almost always have their largest diameter wires as the primary. I
used an old Marx toy train transformer (variable output) to put 6 Volts on the
primary and checked the outputs and labeled the secondaries at 20 times whatever
showed up there. Just be VERY careful as you could be dealing with 100 Volts or
more there!
