any silicon diode that can handle the PIV and current will do. I'd
avoid selenium. There is a lot less voltage drop across a silicon
diode so you need to measure the v. with one and then the other, and
with the current draw, come up with a series resistance and power
rating that will get you the rectified design voltage that was
intended with the selenium. I usually go overboard on the power
rating so the resistor doesn't get real hot.
