The wonder invention of all time:  Duct tape.
I just put a piece of duct tape back there,
pour in the epoxy, smooth it down and hand-sand
it when set and pull out the tape.  
Never had one pop-out on me yet.
Of course, I've never tried to fill a hole bigger than 
about a half-inch, either.
