I believe that the clock has a Telechron motor, although the Telechron name
is nowhere to be found. The only part number that I could read was
1802A001. The manufacturer of the clock was Timing Devices Co., of
McKeesport, PA and the date of manufacture was 5/13/1955. Here is a link
to a photo of the motor:

However, I'm beginning to think that there is nothing wrong with the
motor. I now believe that the grinding sound that I heard was caused by
the amplification of the normal motor noise by virtue of the fact that the
insulating/isolating pads between the metal case and the glass bezel had
lost their dampening ability. I've removed what was left of them and
replaced the pads with a cheap substitute...small strips of ScotchBrite
scouring pad. For the moment, at least, all is quiet. I appreciate all
the suggestions that have been offered. Thanks again and 73,
