Be careful of mixing synthetic oil and petroleum based oils or
greases. There can be incompatibilities. Collins recommended a
synthetic grease for the cams in the R-388. They gave a mil spec for
it. It translates into a type of grease for aircraft such as Aeroshell
No. 7.
My experience is that finding authentic information about
lubrication and lubricants is difficult.
Most of the oil companies make a line of what is called "turbine
oil". This is a highly refined oil originally meant for the high speed
bearings in turbines but is a very good general purpose oil for electric
motor bearings, etc. It comes in various grades which can be
translated to approximate SAE grades. It is possible to obtain it in
small quantities (maybe a quart) from some aircraft service companies.
