First - Even an old Western Electric Model 564 IS an electronic multimeter.
Second - Terman's, 1943 never used "average value" and "DC Value" in an
interchangeable manner at any time.
Even the very old "Wiggins" meter used by electricians going back as far
as my grandfather was an electrician, was an electronic multimeter.
He arrived in the US as a Polish Immigrant at age 10. As soon as was
practical, he applied and received his citizenship. He began working as
soon as he was old enough to be an apprentice. He left this Earth at 84
years of age in '94.
This seems to shoot your "texts of the last century" right out of the water.
