When I was looking at crystal radio stuff in case my son's scout troop was interested, it seemed that some of the kits were intended to tune just the broadcast band. You may want to give some consideration to whether her radio ought to cover the busiest shortwave bands or just the standard broadcast band and whatever may be nearby.
If she finds the radio interesting, I bet she will eventually find it fun to try different detector materials - it seems there are many that will work to some degree. Different diodes or transistor junctions. Crystals from rock collections sometimes turn up working materials. Also interesting may be playing with the coil, for example tapping fewer turns or inserting ferrite rods to discover new bands.
Do you or she know about the young lady who is known as Super Awesome Sylvia? A California girl who did a number of DIY videos and gathered some fame, too. Includes soldering & some electronics. Fun to watch, too. Here's the homepage her Dad helped her set up: http://sylviashow.com/
Let me know if I can help with parts or ideas. The scouts never went down the radio path so I have some stuff left over from tinkering around trying to find parts that I could source cheap & local for some homebrew kits. We have an interesting local surplus store, OEM Parts, here in Colo Springs that may help turn up odd bits.
Cool about the telescope, too! Think she'd be interested in microscopes?

All,
She is in the 5th grade. Is in ALL AP classes.
Loves science, reads
at 9th grade level with ease.
The wife and I will be going down her way this
summer.
I'd like to take it and a small soldering station.
She gets to
keep it *IF* the desire is shown.
[ I may regret this! She already has my
original Celestron N8, 8" SCT
Telescope! ]
Regards, Bob -
