About thirty years ago I went on a tour of the AT&T broadcast
operating center in down town Los Angeles. This was also the
terminating point for long lines coming into the city. We were told
that almost all of the copper in the long lines outside plant had been
replaced with optical fiber (at that time multiple mode). The salvage
value of the copper was greater than the cost of the replacement fiber
plant. Modern single mode fiber has much greater channel capacity so
should be even cheaper.
