[Boatanchors] WAS Goodies NOW Bell

Unfortunately, in this city, you do not have a choice.  All of the AT&T copper wiring has been removed from the utility poles and replaced with fiber optics.  There are no longer any "real" land lines in place.  The copper wiring, in your house, is either converted to digital and placed on the fiber at the conversion box, on the side of your house, or by the modem / "gateway" inside your house.  At that point, it is basically VOIP which goes out on exactly the same fiber.  The only difference is that the RJ45 connectors which the telephone lines inside your house (or business) are connected directly to the conversion box or if they are connected to the modem which then goes, by Category 5e cable, to the conversion box.  However, for some reason, there is a considerably higher charge for your telephone service if the copper, inside your house, goes directly to the conversion box instead of to the modem.
The ringing current, etc., is provided by either the conversion box or the modem.  If the electricity goes out, this voltage is provided by battery backup since there is no voltage carried by fiber optics.  Otherwise, the voltage is supplied by a 12 VDC power supply which also charges the batteries.
Now, this is completely different from wireless / cellular service which eliminates any fiber / copper connection from the telephones inside your house.  I do have a cellular telephone.  However, I am not going to eliminate the telephones from inside my house and use only a cellular telephone. Glen, K9STH

You can go on about that all you want but I am keeping my land line as
long as I can.  It is much more reliable than the crappy battery back
up junk.  Ask anyone who went through Sandy about that.  On a 911 call
they can find me.  I can call my home when I am away.  I can't call my
cell phone and get my home.  I can use my WeCo model 302 and the audio
quality of land lines is vastly better.

I would be delighted to have the old AT&T Bell System back.
