Likely the first major gear I wouldn't call boatanchors are the Collins 
S-1 line and KWM-1, both of which I believe were designed for the 
military with hams as an afterthought. They also succeeded Collins gear 
that was definitely boatanchors. Then came the Drake 1A and then many 
others.
