To my memory, "Boatanchor" was originally intended as a term of derision and came into common use some 35 or so years ago when solid state finals became ubiquitous. You couldn't even give away tube equipment to most hams back then (save for big amps). Back then, I paid $5 for a BC-342 and used to see R-390A's at the hamfests for $50.00; these went unsold. Tube equipment was (dis)regarded as suitable only for tying to the end of a rope and tossing into the drink for keeping a boat in position. My, how times have changed!
