The Navy used ISB from at least the early 60s. Most of the later synthesized
TMC transmitters have ISB capability (with the proper modulator). As Bob
said, voice on one side, data, 16 channels or more, on the other. An R-1051
works well, or, with a really good Rx operator who can distinguish the
necessary tones, the R-390A with converters and audio filters will do. Their
signals sounded like a bunch of McCulloch chainsaws run amok.
