[Boatanchors] 1939 Western Electric E3 Handset

A beautiful 1939 Western Electric marine Radio Telephone
fell into my lap.  How do they get that front panel to 
look like etched glass?

It has a W.E. E3 telephone handset with a rotten cord.
I can get the transmitter and receiver elements out
of course, but can't see how to disassemble the handset
further to replace the cord.

Anyone know anything about E3 handsets?
