When connecting diodes for protection by using their forward conduction threshold (a bit less than .7 v for a regular silicon diode), the scheme should be "inverse parallel", and not "back to back". With the back-to-back connection, there will be no conduction until the voltage reaches one of the diodes' reverse breakdown rating.
