Second paragraph - what exactly are you asking?
Third paragraph - is there some electronics point you are attempting to 
make? Or is this merely a statement?

And how would you define high voltage spikes? How do you figure that a choke
will not give you any spikes that the diodes see?
Do you not consider start up time important?

While I am being rather conservative with diode ratings spikes can not be
ignored.
