Dennis has it right on the voltage across each diode string except he uses a
little higher voltage than there actually is on the warrior transformer. But
then again that is probably a good thing as with modern line voltage it will
probably be higher.
I briefly looked at PSU design but did not put in different choke values but
it showed that the PRV could double with a choke input circuit. So the
normal voltage seen across each diode being around 5000 volts or so would
make it 10000 with the choke.
Also with a choke in the center tap, it limits the voltage across the choke
but it raises the voltage from center tap to ground on the transformer. The
circuit in the warrior has the transformer to withstand it but if trying
this with other transformers be careful as some transformers are designed
without much insulation to ground.
You can put an RC suppressor across the choke as described in the radio
handbook by Orr. A series capacitor and resistor are selected by the
following: capacitance in Mfd = L x I^2 / 10 x E^2
Where,
L is maximum choke inductance henries
I is maximum current passing through the choke in amperes
E is maximum DC supply voltage in KV
The series resistance of the suppressor should equal the load impedance
placed across the supply.
I would probably use around 12 diodes in each string.
If you eliminate the choke that would solve those high spike problems but
then the transformer would be putting out too much voltage for the 811A's.
