Actually a local policeman who was on patrol and was also a ham, saw it
and put it in his patrol car. He had no use for it and sold it to me for
$40 several days later. A local repeater group was having their weekly
on-the-air swap and shop and he put it up there.
My point being that there is stuff out there at curb sites, yard sales,
local hamfests, estate sales, etc. If you're impatient, Ebay is a great
place to go to find things quickly. Since none of the items I mentioned
were on my list to find (actually I don't even have a list since I don't
consider myself a serious or non serious collector of vintage equipment),
time wasn't even a consideration. The SS-1S for $5, was probably due to
the fact the seller had no idea what he had when he was cleaning out his
garage.

As far as the SX-88, there's no reason to sell it. Nice receiver, a bit
clunky at times, the HRO-500 runs rings around it, but it's the only
Hallicrafters rig I still have and it works well as a companion to the
Viking I.
