That happens far too often and it is how a lot of good parts become
unobtainium. Parts like swinging chokes, rare rigs become even
rarer.

Folks, let's tell the relatives, the kids, that all they have to do is
haul everything to a hamfest, and if they want to make it as easy as
possible, just put it all out with a big sign that says FREE. Or they
can try to make a few bucks, but at least the parts and gear will
avoid a landfill and stay in circulation.

I went to a fest yesterday and picked up a box of new carbon
resistors, some 2 watt. These are getting harder to find. Or, they
cost a lot of money compared to 30 years ago. Big wire wound
resistors 200 watt or more are on the way to being unobtainium as all
the consumer and ham stuff becomes low voltage solid state. All these
goodies at the fest were from estates. Don't let all the high voltage
parts get plowed into the dirt. All that's needed is to say what the
stuff is worth and show how to find and go to hamfests and sell or
give away.

If the family is having none of it, make arrangements with other local
hams and tell them you'll do the same for them (if they go first).
It's maudlin I know, but I have heard of too many fantastic big AM
rack rigs ending tragically at a scrap yard. Ray at ER wrote a few
years ago about some SK estate in Colo. -- a barn or two full of black
wrinkle gear, sounded like it was all 1930s/40s gear--the good stuff
built like a brick house and all got scrapped because the relatives
didn't know what else to do. Okay end of sermon.
