[Boatanchors] Seized shaft

I've been working on an HP-606B for the past few days. The bandchange
mechanism was very stiff when I got the instrument, but had become
somewhat easier.
However, today it has become very stiff. I broke the (rather small) knob
while attempting to operate the bandchange. Now the shaft seems to have
frozen in place: I can no longer turn it even with an adjustable wrench.
The tuning turret, etc, still moves OK. It appears to be the short shaft
that passes through a hole in the front panel that has seized.
It is not clear to me how this shaft is retained. The 'inside' end
passes into a housing about 1" deep and about 5/8" diameter.
Any help freeing this up would be most welcome. I just had most of the
rest of this great signal generator up and running (typical!).
