I actually found the large scale integrated devices in the equipment I
have, or have used in the past, to be quite reliable and have never had
to replace any of them. The biggest LSI surface mounted device I've
replaced has been a 48 pin (12 pins on a side) device. A little heat and
a solder sucker work quite well if you have nimble finger dexterity. If
you're all thumbs and/or blind as a bat, it's probably not a job you
would want to tackle.
