The answer depends.

Is one in possession of surface mount soldering/de-soldering equipment, 
or have access to such.

It would be a piece of equipment that indeed uses SMT, and likely 
contains "corporate" developed components that "they" have no intention 
of letting someone have access to the circuitry and programming.

This applies in most of the electronics we already own.  Go back only as 
far as 2005, and kitchen appliances are indeed loaded with them.

It is out of the normal homeowner ability to repair.  It is now a 
replace the Master Control Board environment.
