Rodger,
You simply posted far more than a mouthful!
I have since performed a somewhat cursory search. It didn't provide a
result other than whay all has been posted.
I have never obtained Chuck's comprehensive book.
I've owned a number of different models of theirs.
It has always been an interesting path. There are indeed some black ink
stamps to be found on the chassis' if it hasn't become illegible over
time or corrosion.
I do not consider myself as any form of expert on these old gals.
However I have indeed worked on each and every one that I've owned. I
usually ended with performing an alignment on each of them after the
work was done, checked, and double checked.
Being the typical human, I freely acknowledge flaws that this race
inherently has.
Murphy's Law certainly applies! We came up with O'toole's Law in the
Military. Simply stated, "Murphy was an optimist.". I find that
O'toole's Law applies with a fair degree of instance.
Sincerely, Regards,
Robert "Bob" Bethman

I can say that my SX-88 seems to perfectly match the schematic in the original manual that came with it but it still provided a little Hallicrafters amusement. Because the SX-88 was their high dollar model every connection had a little red dot of inspection paint put on after soldering. One of the coil lugs for the highest range had the nice red inspection dot but no actual solder :)
