The oversize chassis with lots of empty space, along with the power resistor in series with the heater circuit, just beg one to modify the radio by punching more holes for more tubes, using their heaters to replace the power resistor.
I've contemplated adding another IF stage, a real BFO, and an RF Q multiplier (only 2 sections on the tuning and bandspread caps). Perhaps I'd also add an RF amp stage, with another knob to peak the front end.
