Well, as the saying goes something is worth exactly
what someone is willing to pay for it.
The S-120 is essentially the S-38A in later form with
miniature tubes. Almost identical circuit and probably
pretty much identical performance. National made the first 5
tube AA wonder using miniatures with the SW-54. It does not
have a good reputation, supposedly not as good as the S-38.
The S-120 might be better. My first short wave receiver was
an S-38B, bought new. I got it because neighbor kid had one
and I nagged until my parents bought me one too. Probably
could have done better for the money with a used something
or other but was too naive. I still have that receiver
somewhere in storage.
Hallicrafters philosophy was to make equipment which
was good value. For a quite long time they did this. H made
very little "world class" gear but most of their stuff
delivered as advertised and was affordable. Some was very
good. I think H got caught up in making "consumer" grade
equipment which probably affected its ham gear.
Anyway, I would pay maybe $20 for one of these if it
was in really good condition... maybe. Its not something I
particularly want.
