I heard kitty lilter works 
but  if there is live fungus  it  will grow back and   screw up  everything 
else in a damp environment and  can affect your  health ;possibly

It was very effective to remove the smell.
This is what  is used in gas mask canisters.
I think that this is used in water  filters.
