In my experience it was mainly prone to heater opens.  If an "all American
five" radio was brought in for repair you could often fix it by just
replacing the 35Z5. Or you could put an ohmmeter across the power plug
and observe that the circuit was open even with the power switch turned
on; and that almost invariably meant a bad 35Z5.
