A few days ago a CR88 went for a bit over $200 on eBay. Shipping was
$150, which given the weight was not unreasonable to me. But that
receiver should probably be crated. I have been leery of buying one
that I could not transport myself because of the possibility of
shipping damage due to weight. This particular CR88 looked rough
cosmetically but could be finished up. The interior looked fine. no
photo of the underside though. It had the CL meter, RCA logo, and the
original RCA knobs and cabinet.
Mark,
Mine drops gain with the xtal filter in also. Actually, what I notice
is a drop in volume which I assume is a gain drop, but may just be
less sound due to the narrower passband. I'll have to look at the CL
meter and see if the RF drops. I have done no alignment with mine as
it seems pretty hot (European AMers on 10 meters!) and some previous
owner recapped almost everything underneath and did the same with the
carbon resistors, and I figured if I went and tried anything with my
golden screwdriver I'd just make it worse. Since I copy everyone I
want to hear I'm leaving it alone for now and going to tap the 6J5
oscillator and bring its signal out the back to one of these displays
you can get that subtracts 455 kc. There are a few kits on the
market, one I can think of off hand is from Oak Hills Research.
google around for RCA AR88 and again for RCA AR88. one page I found
has links to the British ShortWave Magazine articles from the 1950s
and 1960s
