Several years ago I went to a family gathering and took my camera as well as a pair of spare AA batteries.  At some point my leg felt heat.  I had placed the batteries in my front pants pocket with a large amount of change.  The batteries shorted in my change.  I was amazed that 2 AA batteries could generate that amount of heat.  From that day on I put a piece of tape over the terminals of any battery that I throw away.
