Dear SWL,
be EXTREMELY CAREFUL if you find a supposedly "nice looking" Mackay 3010
receiver! Two things are EXTREMELY important and require the utmost of
attention on your part.
1. The dial drive "belts" have a tendency to rot and start
disintegrating and eventually break. The receiver is totally useless
without these belts and no exact replacements exist (or have existed for
quite a few years).
2. The semitransparent fibreglass dial belt that runs on 16 mm motion
picture film sprockets VERY frequently will have it's sprocket holes
enlarged and not be readable within 2-3 khz or more. This occurs if the
radio officer whose ship had this receiver "scanned" the band back and
forth a lot causing the lateral enlargement of the sprocket holes and
eventually parting the belt and rendering the frequency readout system
useless. TO MY BEST KNOWLEDGE, there are no replacements and none have
been available for some time unless you run into a savvy radio operator
who ordered 2-3 spares and stored them in his parts locker!
The receiver has some rather neat features, but can be a real bear to
find special parts for. Unless you find a pile of them in a warehouse
and you are able to pick and choose, especially to see what condition
the parts referred to above are shot or broken or worn out.
Good hunting!
