Allow HTML and let the web do the work, link to the picture file in
the message via HTML and let imgur, tinypic, photobucket, or some other
free image bitbucket do most of the work. Basic HTML is simple to learn
(most clients will do it for you), and those that don't want to receive
HTML messages on their PC's or mobile clients can just switch their
client to text only. I don't own a smart phone (by choice) but my PC's
mail client is set for text only and it just shows plain text and a link
to the picture, whether I choose to click or not is purely at my
discretion.. Noted that some HTML extensive messages look a mess if the
server does not send both types for the client to choose, but that's the
same with some plain text messages and lists including this one sometimes.
I myself have no quarrels with getting mail of "some guys civilian ham
shack". In fact I'd enjoy it, I'm sure there's plenty more out there who
do as well. If you don't like it, well you have options.
And yes it is possible to save the pictures if you choose to do so. In
fact, 99.9% of the content you read online is saved in cache unless
you've turned off cache and have a magic connection to the web.. So
yeah, pictures are saved by default and remain on disk whether you want
them or not until the cache is dumped/overwritten. (Even afterward the
files are still there, unless shredded or completely overwritten, but
this isn't a lesson in computer forensics.)
I can't remember if mailman does send it out as plain text with HTML
or just one or the other, and/or if it is a choice in the
admin/subscriber options. (I'm checking into that at this very moment.
Just waiting on a reply from another list.. :) At any rate most 'smart'
clients can sort it out. If your phone can't, well it's not that smart
is it? ;p
What I would hate to see is the list get spammed. Opening this option
up would require some self policing as well as some overseeing to keep
the list in line. This may be more work than the moderators want to see.
Just some of my pocket lint..
