Larger diameter has a definite positive effect on Q. See my brain dump:

Unless I was seeking the vintage look, I'd use 4" ABS (PVC, second 
choice) pipe couplings from the home store.

I've always avoided sliders. If the slider bridges adjacent wires, it 
creates a shorted turn that is disasterous for Q. It was probably OK in 
the days of spark where the signals were really broad.
