I did something slightly similar when I was about 10.  I used a toilet paper roll, wound it with solid hookup wire, plastic insulated, and cut off areas of the insulation with a razor knife. For the detector I used a razor blade having the manufacturer's logo in black oxide, and the cat's whisker was a bent safety pin with a piece of pencil lead wired to the end. It worked.
