There may be a difference.
General Radio (aka GR and GenRad) used high resistivity brushes, made of
carbon, like motor brushes. (I say high resistivity... I mean high wrt
copper). The reason for this is the brush shorts several turns of the
winding. The high turn-to-turn resistance reduces the circulating curreent
in the windings. I believe GR had a patent on this.
At least some other brands of variable autotransformers do not do this.
I don't know offhand whether Superios does or does not use a high
resistivity brush.
