They ARE getting rid of them.  AT&T has made no secret of their long
term goal to eliminate POTS.   They want everyone on Uverse or
whatever the internet phone system is, and they are pursuing that goal
state by state with lobbying to change laws.   It is only a matter of
time before you will get a letter offering options and POTS won't be
one of them.   You may have a few years but eventually anyone still on
the copper line will be forced to give it up.   They say it is cost
and economics but what they don't say is that the regulations
governing the provision of phone service are MUCH stricter and
favorable to consumers with POTS.   And of course they don't say that
when your power goes off, the good old twisted pair still works, if
you have an old style phone, whereas that gee whiz new digital
internet phone will not.
