Empire Of The Air is great and so is the book (Tom Lewis is the author). I've read it twice over the years.  It's out of print but can be purchased used on Ebay.

I just wanted to let you all know that I have received the DVD of the 
'Empire of the Air' the begining of Radio documentary by Ken Burns. It is 
about 2 hours but it really is interesting and brought back a lot of things 
even I could remember or heard about. It's mostly in black and white but the 
sound is as original as I can remember it back in the 40's on the old Philco 
cabinet model radio. If any of you have Netflix you can order it. That's all 
folks.
