One little bit of advice for anyone running one of the A/C/R-88 etc.
receivers:
If the set has no fuse add one (that is probably pretty obvious but
mine amazingly never had one put in; 2A 120 v. in the U.S. should do
it) and power the set on and off with a switch in series with the
fuse, leaving the front panel rotary switch permanently in the "rec
mod" position. Use the vacuum rectifier as your in-rush limiter.
You can also re-wire the rotary switch. In other words, don't run
the set in the filament only position. Doing so causes the B+ to go
high unloaded, and that 3 in one case filter cap unit which is rated
for 500 v. can fail. I was lucky, mine failed when I was there to
catch it and power down the set. The one most at risk is the filter
cap between the two chokes. I think that's all covered in Henry
Rogers's radioblvd.com write up but it is worth pointing it out as I
didn't read it until after mine failed. The filter cap unit has 5
lugs. Two of the sections share a common B- lug.
