"I have a 606A manual, which came from an on-line source
that has a drawing of the bandswitch detent mechanism and
good mechanical assembly drawings in the back. I suggest
soaking the shaft in a good bolt remover (forgotten a common
term here). Not WD-40 but one of the good ones. The stuff
made by Kano has a very good reputation.

Try this stuff: http://www.kanolabs.com I think this is what
Richard is talking about. There are several products that work well, Kroil.
Silikroil and Aerokroil. Makes WD-40 look like paste and smells good, too.
I have no monetary or other connection with them, but have used their
products and the are really excellent.
Turn the item in a vertical position and saturate the shaft and feed
through with a good spray of the stuff. Tap lightly with a plastic hammer or
screwdriver handle. Let stand several hours and repeat. You may have to do it
several times but it should eventually free up.
73 and let us know how it works,
