Ian, I have a 606A and a while back, my band switch locked up. I took the old girl apart and one of the slugs in the rotor had backed out enough to get hung up on the casting. Screwed it back in and got it 'close enuf' with a counter and it's been OK.
I'll never understand the agony some guys will go through trying to get the calibration and tracking to match the dial...
Use a good counter on the output and 'forgettaboutit'....

I've been working on an HP-606B for the past few days. The bandchange
mechanism was very stiff when I got the instrument, but had become
somewhat easier.
However, today it has become very stiff. I broke the (rather small) knob
while attempting to operate the bandchange. Now the shaft seems to have
frozen in place: I can no longer turn it even with an adjustable wrench.
The tuning turret, etc, still moves OK. It appears to be the short shaft
that passes through a hole in the front panel that has seized.
It is not clear to me how this shaft is retained. The 'inside' end
passes into a housing about 1" deep and about 5/8" diameter.
Any help freeing this up would be most welcome. I just had most of the
rest of this great signal generator up and running (typical!).

There's nothing wrong with a fixed value air dielectric cap. I prefer
them over fixed vacuum because they do not leak. Fixed vac only
provides higher v. but if you don't need that fixed air cap is better
in dry condx. surplus sales sells fixed air capacitors. Oddly,
fixed vac. caps are more common and cheaper. I use them when space is
available where a mica or doorknob might be used only because they can
be had for a low amount of money. Most don't want them because they
don't know what to do with them (I guess).

I have a 606A manual, which came from an on-line source
that has a drawing of the bandswitch detent mechanism and
good mechanical assembly drawings in the back. I suggest
soaking the shaft in a good bolt remover (forgotten a common
term here). Not WD-40 but one of the good ones. The stuff
made by Kano has a very good reptation. Someone on the list
will remember the names. Let it work for a few days if
necessary. Its likely the shaft is galled and stuck in the
journal.
