Not true, actually. I don't know about the latest crop, but the Orion and Orion II are both more than competent on AM, and hardly rate as plastic radios.  Couldn't convince them to put a SAM detector in the thing, but otherwise they worked very well with an excellent, "real", high quality DSB AM transmit signal that always got good reports ...
