You don't ever want to lower grid drive below tube specs just to reduce
output. There is a mod to add variable voltage to the screen of the final
of the 6146 to adjust output power or you can just run the final off the
low voltage supply and let the modulator run on the high voltage side.
Output of the Ranger drops to about 15 or so watts but you have lots of
modulator output.
