Jim has a great solution in the socket saver. Also think about a tube 'extender', that allows a servicer to take voltage readings above the chassis.
7 Pin socket savers are few and far between. It took me forever to find one. However, the 9 pin plugs are listed on ePay by the ton. Icom used this configuration (accessories), in some of the older radios. Fit perfectly into a 9 pin tube socket.

Good Evening Paul,
I did it years ago. I made a jig to hold a glass cutter. The jig
was nothing more then two pices of plywood at ninety degrees to each
other, with a grove to hold the cutter. Then you sniped off the top of
the tube. place the tube in the jig an rotate. Then next step is to heat
the glass along the cut. I used Ni-crome wire and a small Varic to heat
the glass till it broke free. Took a few tries, but i did get it to
work. Then use a good grade of emery cloth to smoth off the edges.

Has anyone got a tried and tru technique for cutting the glass envelope from
a dead miniature tube, 7 and 9 pin, to obtain the base to make a plug in for
external circuits?

I have some 9 pin plastic plugs and other hams have reported having the
7 pin variety. The ones I have plug directly into a 9 pin miniature tube
socket. I saw them for sale somewhere recently at prices I considered
quiet reasonable (9 pin - not 7 pin). I already have enough for my needs
so I didn't buy but if I find 7 pin plugs similarly priced I'll get a few.
Now...waiting to see who tells us where to look.

Oops. I should probably check links at the end of the TowerTalk
messages before repeating them.
The following link does work. Copy and paste into your browser.
