As a youngster, around 13, we were taught to take a string and soak it 
in alcohol, (could be acetone too), wrap it around a bottle, light it, 
then after it got hot we put it in water.

It would crack right along the line where the string had been lit.

We then smoked the glass REAL good, and used it to watch an eclipse.

Ought to work for a miniature tube.
