[Boatanchors] Need ideas for Dial on my Receiver

Hello Darrell,

Very nice work! I've made or recreated professional looking dials a
couple of times. I use Corel Draw which is expensive, and has a steep
learning curve. Adobe Illustrator is the other professional
alternative. If you're up to the challenge, take a look at Inkscape
which is freeware.

Consider this food for thought:

Scan your hand drawn dial. Import it into the drawing program, placing
it on LAYER 1 in your new drawing, disable drawing and printing for
LAYER 1, then construct the final dial on other layers, essentially
tracing the original.

1) Make a cross to indicate the center of the drawing.
2) Draw the appropriate circles using the center mark as a reference.
In Corel you place the cursor on the center mark, and hold down CTRL and
SHIFT to create a circle centered on that point.
3) Corel, and hopefully Inkscape, allows you to set type around a
circle using FIT TEXT TO PATH.
4) Draw the first dial tick at the 12 o'clock position.
Arrange for DUPLICATES to be pace on top of the original, i.e. 0,0
coordinates.
Move the center of rotation for the tick mark to the center
reference mark.
Now you can rotate the tick to the proper location.
5) Duplicate the first tick with CTRL-D, and rotate the duplicate to
the proper position for the second tick, and so on.

An easier, but less precise solution might be to move ticks and numbers
around "by hand."
Experiment with colors and fonts.
Print the new dial out on label stock, and stick it on the radio.

Anyway, that's how I do it.

I'm not a graphic artist, but I do play one on TV.....

Good luck,
Al
