Hi All,
Many thanks to those who responded to my query on recapping with slight modification for a BC-348H.
Did I also mention that the unit in question was used as a giant mouse toilet? The front panel cover over the front end tube shelf wiring was missing and the critters found their way in, chewing wiring and making a general mess of things throughout the entire set. As I had mentioned, with all of its other imperfections, this set will never be a showpiece. My intent in modification is to eliminate all paper capacitors in the set, including the metal encased ones. Seventy year old paper capacitors, even those in cans, are a liability and I don't care to have this radio do an unplanned standup impersonation of an electric charcoal fire starter.
I could install .01 uF ceramics and disconnect the oil-filled paper caps but leave them in place. I could even install disks on the tube socket terminals of the RF section, and leave the six Micamolds in place on their terminal strips topside, but not connected to circuitry.
I have used BC-348's before, in near stock condition, and have been pleased with their performance. My "modifications", then, are for purposes of safety and not having to shoehorn in some big modern caps to replace the oil-filled paper caps.
Drew
