Ron,
The friction on the drive can be increased by carefully compressing the tabs
surrounding the drive mechanism. I would first clean the drive with solvent
and remove all of the old grease. Blow it out and let it dry. New grease can
be added by packing it in the 1/4" female end and then use the blank end of
a 1/4" drill (or any 1/4" shaft) to pack it back in. I just use a good wheel
bearing grease when doing mine. I have found that a lower viscosity
lubricant (white lithium) does not work as well and gives the drive a
"bumpy" feel to it.
Be careful when compressing the tabs on the mechanism as just a little
adjustment makes a big difference.
If you can't bring it back to good operation, Surplus Sales of Nebraska has
them at $19 dollars each. The shaft is actually too long for your Swan and
you will have to cut it.
Regards,
Alan, WB2FZC

Subject: [Boatanchors] Jackson brothers (style) reduction drives
Hi, I need a bit of help here. I have restored many a radio with these
'ball' type reduction drives. In fact, I have a pair of Swans that are
almost completed.
Is there a way to tighten them up??? One of the Swans is nice and tight, the
other is very loose. It appears someone in the past sprayed it with
penetrating oil. Is the 'secret' in the type of grease or is it a mechanical
thing?. I have several spare drives that are nice and tight, but the shaft
length is too short.
Any experts out there???
thank you!
ron
