If I were so inclined I could climb up any utility pole with phone lines and
pierce through the insulation and listen in. It is even an easier task if
you are in a building. Many buildings do not lock their telco demarc rooms
and you can listen in to your hearts content.

And you didn't mention the insecurity of cell phones. There is an old
adage, never say anything on a radio you don't want the world to know. The
copper circuit enjoys a measure of security the cell phone never will.
