Fortunately, the "flaking" on my HT-20 is along the edge of the panel and no where near any lettering. If I really wanted to, with a little effort, it would be possible to "touch up" the panel to get rid of the areas without paint. The "trick" would be to get the thickness of the repaired areas the same as the original. The paint that Hallicrafters used on the HT-20 front panel is pretty thick and would require several layers of "touch up" paint to achieve the same thickness.

Bob Sullivan W0YVA will blast and re-screen the HT-20 front panel and
it looks great when he's done but it isn't cheap. I paid around $300
but mine was so badly flaking off a number of controls had no paint
around them and it looked pretty bad.
